ACWW Connects and Supports Women and Communities Worldwide

AGRICULTURE

ACWW's Agriculture Committee works to promote our goals and objectives through the Civil Society Mechanism and Ad Hoc Group of International NGOs in Rome, both of which facilitate ACWW's role as an organisation with Special Consultative Status to ECOSOC (the Economic and Social Council, one of six principal organs of the United Nations.

This consultative status means that ACWW is one of many NGOs offering expert advice to ECOSOC, allowing the Council to draw on specialised competence, hands-on experience and flexibility from organisations worldwide. Examples of how NGOs work with ECOSOC include:

  • Provide expert analysis on issues directly from its experience in the field
  • Serve as an early warning agent
  • Help monitor and implement international agreements
  • Help raise public awareness of relevant issues
  • Play a major role in advancing United Nations goals and objectives
  • Contribute with essential information at organisation events

As an organisation with consultative status, ACWW can:

  • Attend international conferences and events
  • Make written and oral statements at these events
  • Organise side events
  • Enter United Nations premises
  • Have opportunities to network and lobby

Zero Hunger Challenge

Launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012, the Zero Hunger Challenge is his personal vision of a world without hunger – and a global call to action to achieve zero hunger. This requires comprehensive efforts to ensure that every man, woman and child enjoy their Right to Adequate Food; women are empowered; priority is given to family farming; and food systems everywhere are sustainable and resilient.

ACWW World President Ruth Shanks AM signed the Zero Hunger Challenge pledge on 10 June 2015 on behalf of ACWW.  When signing the Challenge, Ruth stated "this reinforces our commitment to the elimination of hunger around the world".
